Toscanini had resigned his\npost, the concerts were cut from ninety minutes to sixty, and moved from\nSaturday evenings to Tuesdays. Furthermore, they took place not in Studio 8H\nat Radio City, but at the Cosmopolitan Opera House, later known as the\nMecca Temple or City Center. In order to pay for the hire of the hall, NBC\nnow began charging for tickets which had previously been free. In order to\ngive some kind of value for money, Stokowski extended his concerts beyond\nthe broadcasts. Happily, the disc cutters kept turning for these additional\nperformances and it is from one of these reference discs, not heard in\npublic until now, some 83 years later, that our first recording originates.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe performance did make it into a \u003cem\u003eNew York Times\u003c\/em\u003e review – and even\nif Olin Downes was sniffy both about the music and the venue, he still had\nhigh praise for the performance: “Before the “Pelleas et Melisande” music,\nMr. Stokowski, who made brief explanatory remarks to introduce each\ncomposition played, informed his audience that it had now heard the radioed\npart of the program, and that it might stay and listen, if it would, to the\n“rehearsal” of Schoenberg’s music, which there had been little time to\nprepare and which was very difficult. We thought the appeal superfluous,\nsince this was one of the best performances of the evening.”\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nAlas the opening bars to \u003cem\u003ePelleas und Melisande\u003c\/em\u003e escaped the disc\ncutters and have been permanently lost – but a bit of careful editing in of\na digitally-aged and -matched more recent recording has restored the missing\nsection for this release.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e[\u003ci\u003eN.B. The sample heard on this page comes from the fourth section of \u003c\/i\u003ePelleas und Melisande]\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nErich Leinsdorf’s appointment as successor to Charles Munch at the helm of\nthe Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1962 produced an enthusiastic welcome from\nthe \u003ci\u003eBoston Globe\u003c\/i\u003e, which predicted a “new golden age” for the orchestra,\nadding that “evidence has accumulated this Autumn to suggest that Erich\nLeinsdorf is probably the most profound musical scholar since Karl Muck\namong the Orchestra’s conductors.” There was high praise for the Schoenberg\nplayed that night, where “the remarkable alteration” in the orchestra’s\nstrings had produced excellent results: “Schoenberg’s counterpoint was as\nclear as glass.”\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nHappily this recording, made in stereo and, again, previously unissued, was\nintact from start to finish.
